t-shirts, henleys, and other casual shirts don't have many rules. henleys and v-necks are good for layering, but work well on their own. im a big fan of a long sleeve henley under a plaid in the winter time, and a striped saint tropez shirt in the summer like the one below.
the only thing that i'd steer away from is ultra tight shirts with massive logos across the front. in fact, generally, i'd say no logos at all, and i even cut one off a pocket once because it bothered me so much. designs and patterns are cool, but not weird graffiti, silk anime shirts with flames, or dramatic angel scenes. just keep it simple - no logos, simple designs, and a decent fit.
